Achievement Unlocked - 13.1 Miles

I dont normally write about something personal. Usually all my posts are work or animation related, but this one is not.

I have never been athletic (shocker there). I didnt grow up doing sports or being fit, but rather infront of books or a bowl of ice cream.

Randomly last year, I decided I wanted to achieve something out of bounds for me, so I signed up for a Half Marathon. I had 10 months to train. From couch to 13.1 miles in almost a year. (yea, should be doable.)

Now, I could not run. When I first started, I was jogging/walking fast while breathing heavy and out of breath for 30 seconds at a time. One mile was alot, let along half of a marathon.

Laura, why are you blabbering on about running? Well, I'm getting there.

Long story short, this past weekend, I did it.

Two training programs later.

Many blisters, sore feet, and painful massages in.

Endless bad spotify playlists and several pairs of ill fitting headphones tested.

Lots of tears and frustrations and sweaty mornings.

A handful of panic attacks.

On Saturday May 7th, I completed a fricken half marathon.

Life is more than this industry. I am more than just a CG Supervisor or an advocate for animation. I have dreams and passions that only make me a stronger leader and person.

In the past, I have defined myself through my job. But for the first time in the 10+ years I have been career driven, I am defining myself as something more.

I am a runner.

I am someone who can set goals for myself and meet them.

I am a badass.

But, with all that said, I think I'll pass on doing another half marathon.

Remember that your work is not who you are. You are a person. You are an achiever. You can move mountains and your failures only set you up for future successes. Work should only add to that :)
